7th STS ITALIA SUMMER SCHOOL
ARTS IN/AND SOCIETY

The 7th STS Italia Summer School, titled “ARTS IN/AND SOCIETY: DESIGN, CREATIVE PRACTICES AND TECHNOSCIENCE”, was held in Rome from September 3 to 6, 2024 at the Royal Academy of Spain (RAER) , in collaboration with the Spanish network of STS scholars, redECTS.

We explored the dialogue between art, science, and technology: how the notions and methods of science and technology studies can contribute to the development of skills that allow the production of artworks or design prototypes, and how design and artistic practices can enable social sciences to rethink and address the intersection of technoscience and daily practices in new ways. 21 participants (PhD students and post-docs) from various European countries (and beyond) engaged in dialogue with professors, experts, and practitioners from the fields of social sciences, architecture, design, art, and music.

At the Academy’s wonderful venue, for four days, participatory and performative educational activities involved PhD students and professors in a rich and stimulating scientific and cultural experience.

Among the lecturers were:

Silvia Casini (University of Aberdeen), Adolfo Estalella (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), Maral Kekejian Hernand (curator), Michela Cozza (Mälardalen University), Nerea Calvillo (University of Warwick) Attila Bruni (Università degli Studi di Trento), Paolo Magaudda (Università degli Studi di Padova), Gabriele Panico (musician and performance artist). For the scientific and organizing committee: Gianluca Burgio (Università degli Studi di Enna “Kore”), Alvise Mattozzi (Politecnico di Torino), Micol Rispoli (Politecnico di Torino), Ramon Rispoli (Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II), Assunta Viteritti (Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”).
