Goals and main topics

The school program will be focused on stimulating a sensitivity among students for the complexity of urban phenomena. Within an STS analytical framework, the school will introduce students to research experiences, approaches, methods, and techniques in order to explore cities and the built environment. In particular, the course will call attention to the distributed, entangled and hybrid nature of cities, focusing on the following questions:

  • How do we map and understand urban spaces?
  • How are cities represented and how to represent and account for cities?
  • How is urban space shaped by infrastructures, technologies, policies and organizational processes?
  • How to describe cities in their transformations, emergencies, everyday practices and lived experience?

Special attention will be devoted to urban controversies; discourses and uses of the city; urban infrastructures and mobility related aspects.

Workshops facilitated by tutors will integrate these topics with morning lectures by leading STS scholars.

Confirmed invited lecturers

  • Barbara Allen (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University);
  • Michael Guggenheim (Goldsmiths College, University of London);
  • Ola Söderström (Université de Neuchâtel).

Who should attend?

Participation is open to PhD students and junior researchers from different fields and disciplines (Social Sciences, Architecture, Philosophy, Geography, Urban Management, Urban Planning, Policy Studies, Environmental Studies, Innovation Studies) whose research is related to urban phenomena and who are interested in developing a STS sensibility toward them.

The number of participants is limited to 25 people.

Benefits from attending

Students will gain insights and information in STS approaches to the study of urban phenomena, both attending lectures and practicing concepts, theories and empirical methods in group discussions and workshops. The school is intended to act as an intellectually and socially stimulating environment, so as to foster active networking and fruitful follow-up among participants.

Organization

The school will articulate through Lectures and Workshops. Lectures will be given by internationally known scholars with a transdisciplinary background on Urban Studies and Science and Technology Studies. Workshops will engage students around Summer School themes in small working groups. All Lectures and Workshops will be in English.

Finally, the school will include a one-day excursion to surrounding urban areas, an experience of ‘micro fieldwork’, in order to offer further materials for workshop activities.

Schedule, costs, and accommodation

All participants are expected to attend the entire duration of the Summer School and a Certificate of Attendance will be delivered at the end of it.

The fee for participation is 150 Euro (100 EURO for STS Italia members). The fee includes:

  • access to all Lectures and Workshops;
  • lunches;
  • welcome aperitif;
  • one-day excursion to surrounding urban areas.

A list of selected hotels, B&B and restaurants (at special rates) will be provided to participants.

Between 5 and 10 full or partial scholarships will be available for talented students.

Full scholarships cover the participation fee and accommodation; partial scholarships cover just the participation fee. Scholarship applicants must send a Statement of Purposes (max 400 words) explaining why attending this summer school would be important for their academic studies or career, outlining also the reasons why they need a scholarship and specifying for what type of scholarship they are applying for (full/partial).
